A Year of Reinvention7 : Progress and Results

Wright College launched its Reinvention7 effort one year ago, in April 2013, with a team of faculty, staff, and students dedicated to developing and implementing ways to support student success. On behalf of the R7 Team, I would like to share information about recent accomplishments as well as some of the current projects we are working on.

Student GPS Tools
Beginning in April 2013, Wright’s R7 Team collaborated with teams from around the district as well as faculty and advisors to create a set of tools to improve our students’ ability to determine their own academic/career interests as well as to support completion. These tools include:

  • Focus Areas – 10 broad areas of study that students now select early in their academic career at Wright to help them narrow their focus
  • Semester Maps in most all disciplines and degree programs
  • Individual Focus Area Overviews – program, employment, and career information on each of the 10 focus areas

Thanks to the assistance from district-wide faculty, the current semester maps are now available to students through their advisors and through the CCC website. Currently the two Reinvention7 advisors –  Lauren Lopez and Rolando Sosa –  are working to train and assist advisors in using the Student GPS tools as part of their advising and registration processes.

Transferability Analysis
To help identify the courses that don’t transfer or don’t transfer in the manner that would be most beneficial to students, the R7 Team, led by faculty team member Julius Nadas, has collected transfer information for all Wright College courses. R7 is working with Academic Affairs and other CCC colleges to determine the best way to ensure transferability for those courses that are currently not transferable but we believe should be.

Block Scheduling
In partnership with Academic Affairs, the Reinvention7 team has been involved with the planning and launch of eight full-time schedule blocks in Fall 2014. With these new blocks, students will be able to sign up for all of their first semester Fall classes at once based on their placement scores. Schedule blocks will allow for cohorts of students to build greater connection to each other and the schools, improve overall student engagement, and hopefully, lead to greater academic success for the students.

PAC Enhancement Project
With relevant and current curriculum being an important goal at Wright and CCC, two Reinvention7 team members – faculty members Polly Hoover and Maria Jaskot-Inclan –  have been working with a team of administrators and faculty to revise the process for curriculum change and approval. This enhancement of the PAC (Proposed Academic Change) process aims to increase the speed, ease, and clarity of making changes to curriculum for faculty, staff, and administrators. As part of their work, Maria and Polly have worked with their team to visit and present their plan to and receive feedback from all 7 CCC colleges, the Steering Committee (district-wide members of faculty and administrators), and District and college faculty councils and curriculum committees, for a total of 21 meetings. Their work has also been shared with vice-chancellors, college presidents, and CCC Board of Trustee members. They presented their work to this point to Wright College faculty and administrators, to the Academic Affairs Committee, and to the Chairs’ meeting, as well as at the all-day CCC Curriculum Retreat and Workshop at Truman College on March 28, 2014. There, they led workshops to analyze and apply the rubrics which will be used to evaluate future curriculum proposals. With the PAC Enhancement Project Core Team, they have delivered: rubrics, a Curriculum Development Page on the CCC Website, a SharePoint repository and proposal tracking system, Syllabi templates, and Curriculum Tools, among other items.

Student Engagement
One area that is of particular interest to Reinvention7 is connecting CCC and Wright students with like-minded students at four-year partner institutions to both provide an insight into the world they may transfer into as well as to develop personal and academic connections at those institutions. To that end, Reinvention7’s student member, outgoing SGA president Phillip Price, has been working with a team of students from around CCC to catalog all of the student groups and clubs that currently exist at CCC and other area colleges. Using this information, he is working to link student clubs and organizations with similar organizations at Wright and other CCC colleges. Where a CCC college does not have a group, Phillip is also working to determine if there is interest in creating a group.

The R7 team is committed to improving processes, programs, and support services to achieve greater success for CCC students.
