Celebrate Black History Month at Wright College

February 1st marks the beginning of Black History Month, which highlighs the historical contributions that people of African descent have made to this country and throughout the world. Wright College is celebrating Black History Month with a full calendar of events centered around four themed weeks: Health and Fitness, The Black Experience, Professional Careers, and Arts and Entertainment. The Black History Month committee looks forward to welcoming, students, faculty and staff to the month’s events, which include:

The Black Experience Week

  • Monday February 13, 2017 – Screening of Ava Duvernay’s 2017 Oscar Nominated Netflix Documentary “13th” Host: Professor Susie Bonner
    Location: Main campus, Lecture Hall E 115
    Time: 1:00 pm -4:00pm
  • Tuesday February 14, 2017 – Great Books Student Society Reading and Discussion: African American Poets on Love
    Location : WiYC S100
    Time: 12:30pm – 1:50 pm
  • Thursday February 16, 2017 – How Barack Obama & The First Family will be viewed in History
    Host: Chris Alexander and Marcus O’Neil
    Location : S-247
    Time: 12:00pm – 2:00pm

The Black Professional Week

  • Wednesday February 22, 2017 – “Hidden Figures: Blacks in Manufacturing and IT/Stem Programs” Host: CNC Program Coordinator, Billy McFarland
    Location : Humboldt Park campus, Room 315
    Time: 10:00am – 12:00pm
  • Thursday February 23, 2017 – Black in the Professional World Panel
    Panelists: Maze Jackson-Political Analyst, Kari Steele-Commissioner Metro Water Reclamations District, Talmadge “Ike” Hill-former NFL athlete, Tanikia Carpenter-entrepreneur, filmmaker, David Griggs- IT Program Manager
    Host: Latoya Zubowicz
    Location: Main campus, Theater
    Time: 10:00am – 12:30pm

Arts and Entertainment Week

  • Tuesday February 21, 2017 – Kush Thompson poetry: “To the Police Officer Eyeing me at Panera Bread” and “Still”
    Location: Humboldt Park, Room 128
    Time: 1:00pm – 2:00pm
  • Monday February 27, 2017 – Black in Latin America Host: Meredith Cummings
    Location: Main campus, WiYC (S100)
    Time: 6:00 – 7:00 pm

These are just a few events that we invite you to share in as we honor our country’s heroes, tell their stories,  commemorate their achievements, and create awareness throughout the Wright community.
