Preparing Students for the Future – Soft Skills Conference
Roughly sixty students attended the Soft Skills Conference hosted by Claire Boeck, Wright’s Skills Connection Coordinator, on Friday, April 21st. The attendees included students from various programs, including Information Technology, Paralegal, Adult Education, Economics, and Occupational Therapist Assistant. What, you ask, drew these students to Wright College on a Friday?
Yes, the event did feature snacks and raffle prizes as incentives. However, the Soft Skills Conference was designed to help students holistically prepare themselves for job or internship searches this summer. Kasey Hooper, the Vice President of Merchandising at Crate and Barrel, spoke to the students about leadership, communication styles, and how to establish yourself when you are a recent hire. Breakout sessions included creating a LinkedIn page, researching jobs and contacting employers, having a professional photo taken, practicing interviewing skills, and learning about group communication. The sessions were very hands-on so students could apply what they learned. Claire wanted students to end the day with a sense of accomplishment.
85% of students who completed a post-event survey said the conference was definitely interesting, informative, and useful; 15% said it was mostly interesting, informative and useful. 97% indicated they are likely to apply what they learned. One student wrote the event was “Terrific, passionate and informative. Thank you! :)”
Events like this one would not succeed without faculty and staff support. Thank you to all who participated and/or promoted the event. The students gained valuable knowledge, experience, and skills.
