Wright College joins App STRONG Puerto Rico initiative
Following the impact of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, many college hopefuls from Puerto Rico have limited access to power, internet and cell phone usage. Though Puerto Rico’s governor recently celebrated reaching 50% power capacity, the road to recovery is still ongoing, presenting a challenge to those who wish to apply online to college. However, twice a year, AutopistaAMERICAS holds Puerto Rico’s largest and most well known college fair on the island, running for over 20 years. Through their App STRONG Puerto Rico initiative, application centers are set up in The Sheraton Old San Juan for students who want to apply to college online. This year, thanks to the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), Wright College staff members; Ken Santiago, Dean of Wright Humboldt Park, and Ramon Cabrales, Wright Recruiter, were able to represent City Colleges of Chicago at the fair.
Even though several island households are still without power, the hotel is fully operational with electricity, internet access, running water and air conditioning. Transportation is even provided to students from different stops around the island to the Sheraton. Students who attend will be able to apply for college, learn about programs, and file FAFSA applications. The App STRONG Puerto Rico center will be set up in The Sheraton Old San Juan for the week of December 11th-15th.
